Maintaining Your Surgical Loupes

Blog

Surgical loupes are invaluable tools which allow you to be more precise as you perform incisions and other work. If you're trying out your first pair, you probably want to ensure that nothing happens to them. These loupe maintenance suggestions could help you hang on to them and keep them functional.

Purchase Ear Hooks and Retainers

After taking time to find the perfect loupes for your practice and purchasing it, you may not yet realize that you are risking their good condition every time you put them on your face. That's because, as you may know if you regularly wear eyeglasses, that loupes may slip while you're working. Not only can that ruin your ability to see the work you're doing, but if they crash onto the ground, you'll need to have them fixed.

Luckily, various accessories can hold surgical loupes in place. Ear hooks, for instance, can be slipped onto the temple parts of the loupes right where they sit on your ears. Retainers are typically made of some kind of cord and can be attached to each temple  of the loupes. By tightening them so they fit your head, you won't need to think much about the loupes as you operate.

Clean with Vinegar/Water Solution

Like regular eyeglasses, your loupes need cleaning. Rather than using tap water that can contain minerals, combine distilled water and vinegar in a 1:1 ratio. Then, dip a cotton ball or swab into that solution and wipe lenses softly.

Avoid Chemiclaves and Autoclaves

If you'd like to toss your surgical loupes into a chemiclave or autoclave with the rest of the tools you're sterilizing, you may open the machine only to see that you've destroyed them. If you need sterile loupes for your work, contact loupe manufacturers about what you might be able to do.

Cover Lenses Nightly

After long days, leaving the loupes in the office and heading home is probably what you plan to do. However, for their protection, ensure that you're always covering up the lenses of your loupes with the provided caps. This prevents dirt from settling on the lens surface and if someone should accidentally bump the loupes in the morning before they've had their coffee, the lenses are protected.

Your loupes should remain in excellent shape if you pay attention to these maintenance details. Before problems arise, finding and communicating with optical product repair shops about their services is wise.

All about Your Eyeglasses Options

I began wearing eyeglasses at a young age, but as a child and teenager, when it came time to choose a new pair every year after my annual eye exam, my parents always let me choose the style and then chose the lens coatings and other options for me before they ordered them. After I moved out on my own as an adult and went to my eye exam and picked out my glasses alone, I was so overwhelmed by all of my glasses options that I had to call my parents for advice! Since then, I have dedicated myself to learning all about eyeglasses, so I can make the best choices on my own without my parents help. I have learned a lot about them and want to share what I have learned with others on a blog! I hope I can help you make the best eyeglasses decision!
