Understanding Refractive Errors and Eye Care Treatment Options

Blog

One of the most common types of vision problems is referred to as refractive error(s). There are four types of refractive errors. These conditions may have a subtle onset. Some individuals may dismiss vision changes as being unimportant, but that is not the case.

Refractive errors are treatable. However, if treatment is delayed, it is likely that vision will get worse.

Types Of Refractive Errors

There are four types of refractive errors. Nearsightedness is a refractive error that allows individuals to see things that are at a relatively close distance. Things that are further off will appear blurry. Farsightedness is a refractive error that allows individuals to distinguish things that are further away from them. Things that are closer in distance appear blurry. Astigmatism is a condition that causes refractive errors that produce blurred vision regardless of distance. Presbyopia is a refractive error that affects individuals as they age. It is possible for an individual who has had 20/20 vision all of their life to develop this type of refractive error. It may not be immediately obvious, but individuals may begin to squint as this condition progresses. Routine eye exams throughout life can effectively identify changes in the lens and refractive errors.

Treatment Options

Refractive errors are considered eye conditions that have easy eye care treatment solutions. Contact lenses and eyeglasses are the most common solutions and have been available for many years. However, technological advancements have made it possible for solutions such as LASIK, Visian ICL, and Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK) to correct vision to the point of 20/20 vision. These surgical procedures involve reshaping the cornea.

What Happens If It Is Not Treated

A variety of complications can occur if individuals do not get an eye exam and choose a corrective procedure or optical product. It is possible for this condition to lead to blindness. Individuals might also experience eye strain due to squinting, and this may lead to headaches. Sometimes individuals do not realize that the source of their headaches is related to their eye health. This is is why it is ideal to get routine eye exams, which are the best way to identify refractive errors and the type an individual has. Individuals should consider the dangers of not getting eye care treatments, as it can lead to issues such as unsafe driving.

An eye doctor is a good resource to use to determine if refractive errors, eye disease, or another condition is impairing sight. They can perform a variety of eye exams and explain the importance of routine eye exams.

All about Your Eyeglasses Options

I began wearing eyeglasses at a young age, but as a child and teenager, when it came time to choose a new pair every year after my annual eye exam, my parents always let me choose the style and then chose the lens coatings and other options for me before they ordered them. After I moved out on my own as an adult and went to my eye exam and picked out my glasses alone, I was so overwhelmed by all of my glasses options that I had to call my parents for advice! Since then, I have dedicated myself to learning all about eyeglasses, so I can make the best choices on my own without my parents help. I have learned a lot about them and want to share what I have learned with others on a blog! I hope I can help you make the best eyeglasses decision!
